SHIMIZU TAKES BRONZE ON FINAL DAY OF ASIAN C’SHIPS

TASHKENT(May 22) — Hiroyuki Shimizu won a bronze medal as the Asian westling championships came to a close with action in five greco-roman weight categories. Shimizu lost to Beijing Olympian Ali Esmaeil Mohammadi (IRI) in the second round on a force-out and a lift from reverse waistlock but came back with a pair of wins for the bronze medal at 66kg.

The bronze medal gives Shimizu a complete set of medals in his last three international competitions. Shimizu won the gold medal at the Sunkist Open in October and a silver in the Hungary Grand Prix in March.

Mohammadi, meanwhile, went on to win the 66kg title as Iran won four of the last five gold medals for the team title with 65 points. Host Uzbekistan was second with 50 points while Korea took third place one point behind. Japan finished seventh with 27 points.

At 96kg, like Shimizu, Yusuke Yamamoto lost to his Iranian opponent in the second round and advanced to the match for third with a win over two-time former Asia champion Margulan Assembekov (KAZ). Yamamoto, however, lost to 2009 Asia bronze medal winner Yahia Abutabeekh (JOR) and had to settle for fifth.

Kazuo Tamura (74kg) and Hirokazu Shinjo (120kg) lost their opening matches and lost again in the consolation bracket and had to settle for 10th and 11th in their respective weight categories.

National team newcomer Taichi Oka (84kg) slipped off a front headlock in his first match and was pinned, failing to get a chance to wrestle in repechage.
