SHUNAN, Yamaguchi (October 4-5) – Tsutomu Fujimura defended his 74kg crown in greco-roman and lifted host Yamaguchi to the wrestling team title at the National Sports Festival.
Fujimura's title along three earlier crowns in senior men's freestyle gave the hosts the team title wihth 70 points, followed by next year's host Gifu with 62.5 points and Kyoto with 61.
The National Sports Festival is Japan's annual multi-sport competition modeled after the Olympic Games, called "Kokutai", a shortened version of the meet's official Japanese name.
Along with Fujimura, Masuyuki Amano won for a third straight year at 84kg and Ryo Minemura repeated as champ at 55kg.
In the high school division, national greco-roman champ Minoru Ota also gave the locals a boost toward the team title when he won his second Kokutai title at 55kg. Ota is a student at Yamaguchi's Yanai Gakuen high school.
Other high school champions to win at Shinnanyo gymnasium were Kenichiro Fumita (50kg), Ryuta Yonaha (84kg), Masaaki Shikiya (96kg) and Shin Sonoda (120kg). In addition to the two greco-roman titles, Yonaha has also won the JOC cadet crown and national high school freestyle titles this year.
