COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado (February 3) – Japanese collegiate champion Mamoru Handa and student runner-up Takeshi Yamaguchi won bronze medals in men’s freestyle at the Dave Schultz Memorial international wrestling tournament.
Handa of Senshu University reeled off four wins at 55kg for the bronze medal after an opening loss to junior world champ Amit Kumar (IND) in the second-round. Waseda’s Yamaguchi, meanwhile, posted a pair of wins on each side of a semifinal loss to eventual champion Raymond Jordan (USA), pinning 2010 Asia champ Narsingh Pancham Yadav (IND) for the bronze.
Sosuke Takatani, winner of the Japanese senior national crown in December, also notched four wins at 74kg but had to settle for fourth place. The Takushoku University ace fell in the semifinals to 2010 U.S. world team member Trent Paulson (USA) and in the bronze medal match to NCAA runner-up Tyler Caldwell (USA).
Naoto Takayasu (55kg) of Nippon Sports Sciences University and Nihon University’s Masaru Ikeda (60kg) each notched a pair of wins for the Japan’s student select squad but did not advance to the medal matches.
