TOKYO (June 16-17) – Yasuhiro Inaba racked up three wins for the 55kg crown in men’s freestyle and was named the outstanding wrestler of the Meiji Cup national invitational tournament.
In addition to 2010 world bronze medal winner Inaba, six collegiate champions made their mark by winning their first invitational titles in greco-roman and men’s freestyle at Yoyogi National Gymnasium in Tokyo.
Masaru Ikeda, a second-year student at Nihon University, stopped NU grad and 2006 world bronze medalist Noriyuki Takazuka for the 60kg crown and was named the outstanding wrestler of the men’s freestyle competition.
In greco-roman, Tsubasa Ogata, who was a bronze medalist in the All-Japan meet in December, won at 55kg in greco-roman and earned OW honors for the classic style.
Asia bronze medal winner Eri Tosaka of Shigakkan University won the 48kg title and the women’s outstanding wrestler award.
Risako Kawai won the 51kg title and edged closer to joining the women’s national team for the world championships this fall in Canada and becoming the first daughter of a former world team member to also go to the world meet.
Kawai’s mother, formerly Hatsue Kotaki, wrestled at 53kg in the 1989 world championships in Martigny, Switerzerland.
