FURUICHI REPEATS, JAPAN CROWNS 6 IN GIRLS CADET WORLD MEET
BAKU (August 23-24) – Masako Furuichi defended her 65kg crown and led Japan to the team title with six individual champions in the girls' events at the cadet wrestling world championships.
Furuichi of the JOC elite academy program was joined by academy teammate Mayu Mukaida (52kg) as well as classmates from Tokyo's Abe Gakuin high school Ai Kuradate (56kg) and Yoshimi Kayama (60kg)
Also reaching the top of the medals podium for Japan were Nanami Irie (49kg) of Ogura Shogyo high school in Fukuoka and Kika Kagata (46kg) of Tokyo's Gold Kids club.
Kagata's teammate with the Gold Kids Kanna Asakura lost in the third-place final at 43kg and had to settle for fifth place.
Japan's six champions in the girls meet was unprecedented and gave Japan the team title with 66 points — even without entries in the two lightest weight categories. Russia with one champion and 63 points was the runner-up while Ukraine took third with one champion and 57 points.
