OSAKA (October 26-28) – Rei Kuwaki won his fourth straight title in freestyle at 55kg and Tsuyoshi Masuya won his third overall crown in greco-roman at the west Japan student wrestling championships.
Kuwaki of Chukyo Gakuin University in Gifu became the first freestyle wrestler since 2001 to win four straight in west Japan. The victory made Kuwaki the 15th wrestler overall in both styles and ninth in freestyle to win four back-to-back crowns for four years..
Meanwhile, in greco-roman, Masuya added a third crown at 60kg to his previous triumphs in 2009 and 2010, giving Kansai University its only titlist of the tourney.
Along with Kuwaki, Chukyo Gakuin wrestlers won three weight categories in freestyle for a second straight year, while Tokuyama also crowned three champions. Tokuyama also had four titlists in greco-roman.
Two-time defending greco-roman champion Taketo Yokoi of Chukyo Gakuin tried to make it three in a row at 96kg, but was denied by Keigo Morimoto of Kyushu Kyoritsu University.
