OSAKA (December 8-9) – Chukyo Gakuin University won its first west Japan collegiate dual meet championship crown with 5-2 win over defending champion Tokuyama University in the meet's finale at Kanaoka Park Gymnasium in Sakai.
The Chukyo Gakuin wrestling team, which had finished second three times since 2010, finally triumphed for its first title since the club was established in 2000.
CGU 60kg entry Hiroya Zaitsu was named the meet's outstanding wrestler while teammate Rei Kuwaki, who won his fourth straight west Japan individual championship at 55kg in October, was named west Japan's wrestler of the year.
Meanwhile, Doshisha University, which won 13 west Japan championships between 1963 and 1990, finished at the bottom of the first division and will compete in the second division tourney next spring for the first time since the club was established in 1945.
Kansai University, banned from competition in 2010 over problems away from the mats, returned with five convincing wins in the second division and will advance to first division competition in the spring tourney.
