OSAKA (August 21-22) – Former cadet world bronze medalist Kenichiro FUMITA scored a first-period fall or technical fall in each of his six matches at 60kg to win his third straight title in the national high school greco-roman wrestling championships.
Wrestling at Kanaoka Park Gymnasium, FUMITA became the first wrestler to win a high school greco-roman nationals title three years in a row. He won the title at 50kg in 2011, the 55kg crown last year. FUMITA was also the cadet world bronze medalist at 50kg in 2011.
FUMITA of Nirasaki Kogyo high school in Yamanashi will also try to make it three straight at the National Sports Festival in October.
Meanwhile, 2012 cadet world team member Mao OKUI of Wakayama Kogyo high school also won six matches inside three minutes to repeat as 74kg champion.
The winners in the three heaviest weight categories – Koji TAKEDA, Taira SONODA and Satoshi KAIZUKA – all won at the freestyle high school nationals earlier in the month. TAKEDA and SONODA also won at the high school invitational in March, giving them three national high school wrestling titles for the year.
