TOKYO (December 23) – Saori YOSHIDA turned away a challenge from a reigning world champion for her 12th national championships crown and world silver medalist Sosuke TAKATANI came from behind for his fourth straight All-Japan title to be named Japan’s wrestler of the year.
Wrestling in the 53kg final on the closing day of the championships at Yoyogi National Gymnasium, Yoshida countered a single-leg attack by Chiho HAMADA and slipped in a half-nelson to crank the 55kg world champion over the fall 53 seconds.
It was the third time that Yoshida has defeated a reigning world champion for the All-Japan title. Yoshida defeated 59kg world champion Seiko YAMAMOTO in the 2003 nationals and world champion at 51kg Hitomi SAKAMOTO in the 2006 All-Japan meet.
Meanwhile, Kaori ICHO picked up her 11th national championship crown with a no-nonsense 6-0 win at 58kg over two-time junior world champion Risako KAWAI, ranked No.2 in the world behind Icho by United World Wrestling throughout most of the summer.
In the women’s third championship, Asia champion Yurika ITO dropped Asian Games gold medalist Rio WATARI to her back midway through the second period of the 63kg final and held on for a 6-6 win on criteria.
In men’s freestyle, Takatani came from behind to defeat Daisuke SHIMADA, 8-6, for his fourth straight All-Japan title to be named the winner of the Emperor’s Cup, the award presented to Japan’s wrestler of the year. Takatani was also awarded the Emperor’s Cup in 2012.
World student champion Fumitaka MORISHITA defeated world team member Yuki TAKAHASHI in the 57kg final for his third straight national championship crown.
In greco-roman, world team member Kazuma KURAMOTO dropped Shinobu OTA to his back at the start of the second period of the 59kg final and pressed for the fall at 3:14 and his third straight All-Japan triumph. In the semifinals, Ota defeated Asian Games gold medalist Kohei HASEGAWA.
Asian Games bronze medalist Norikatsu SAIKAWA (98kg) won a sixth title overall, and fourth straight national championship crown.
